Tim Severin (1940-2020) was an Irish adventurer, explorer, and historian who gained renown for his expeditions to retrace legendary journeys and voyages of cultural significance. He was particularly interested in the voyages of early medieval seafarers, such as the Vikings, and conducted numerous expeditions to retrace their routes and learn about their culture.
Severin was the author of over 20 books, including several bestsellers, that chronicled his expeditions and historical research. Some of his most famous expeditions include sailing a replica of an ancient Irish leather boat, retracing the route of St. Brendan's legendary voyage to America, and sailing a replica Viking longship across the Atlantic.
He was widely respected for his historical accuracy and attention to detail, and was a key figure in the field of experimental archaeology, which involved re-creating ancient artifacts and technologies to better understand their use and function.
